You have started on a journey that will develop your body mind and spirit. No matter what level you reach you will be changed for the better. Most students will find the training too difficult at some point or another and their journey will end. They will of course have benefited immensely and it will stand to them during their lives. Others will persist until the burden of ordinary life prevents them from continuing their training. All that they have learnt will stay with them and help them achieve. Then there is a very small group of people that will persist. They will master all that they can learn and gain complete control over their body mind and eventually their spirit, conquering fear. They will realise the art and its? true meaning becoming masters of their lives and help others achieve the same. They will stand for what?s right against adversary and will carry the art to the future for the next generation. They, are the Black Belts.
Discipline:
Taekwon-do classes promote discipline, respect, courtesy and self-control. This in turn embeds itself in the student and into everyday life.
Self Defence:
Men women and children have to be able to defend themselves if the need arises. Taekwon-do teaches the techniques of unarmed combat for self-defence and includes skilled applications of punches, kicks, blocks, dodges, restraints and escapes.
Fitness:
In Taekwon-do you'll learn to stretch and exercise nearly every muscle group in your body. It has been scientifically developed to maximise the bodies potential in every area. Classes will push you both physically and mentally. To increase stamina, concentration and self-control and to reach your peak you must exercise your mind as well as your body. Of course the positive sides of this training will carry over to all other areas of life too.
Power:
Power training consists of both pad work and breaking. The skills that you learn will be practised against pads, which will enable you to develop good techniques, power and confidence in a safe environment. This is also used to develop reactions, co-ordination and improve your overall fitness. The next step is to practise breaking boards, which not only increases your confidence but also toughens the body.
Flexibility:
This is incredibly important in Taekwon-do. Due to the types of exercises and techniques performed, your flexibility and mobility will improve immensely. Muscles are like elastic bands. The less flexible you are the greater the resistance to motion your muscles exert. The more flexible you are the less resistance to motion you muscles will exert and this results in higher, faster, more powerful kicks and techniques.
Self-Confidence:
Being able to defend yourself makes you a more confident person, in all facets of life. Constant training builds a sense of achievement as students overcome the difficulties before them, growing in self worth and esteem. Achieving new goals and progressing up the ranks is proof of a person?s skill. Taekwon-do is about improving your mental and physical state. It builds a level of self-confidence unsurpassed by any other form of exercise.
Patterns, The Art Of Taekwon-do:
Patterns are various fundamental movements most of which represent either offensive or defensive techniques. They are set to a fixed and logical sequence against imaginary opponents. We practise patterns to improve our techniques, improve flexibility of movement, master body shifting, develop muscles, balance and breath control. Patterns help us to harmonise all that we have learnt. We also acquire new techniques, which cannot be obtained from other forms of training.
Sparring:
The different forms of sparring in Taekwon-do help the student develop confidence, accuracy and speed. It is the closest form of training that we have to simulate a real fight situation and will teach a student how to employ the techniques they have learnt at full speed in an unpredictable situation. All of this is done in a safe and friendly environment where people are there to help not hurt each other. One form of sparring is called free sparring where protective equipment is worn. This has developed into one of the most exciting sports in the world today. There are strict safety rules to ensure the competitors safety and students get the opportunity to compete in many competitions.
Taekwon-do for Kids:
Lots of children want to train in Tae Kwon-do because:
- They are being bullied
- They have low self-esteem/confidence
- They are lacking in co-ordination/motor skills
- They find it hard to make friends
Taekwon-do addresses all of these problems in a friendly safe environment. We will teach your child core values such as discipline and respect. By starting at an early age they will perfect these skills, which will last a lifetime. By respecting others they learn to respect themselves.
We always aim to develop:
- Self-confidence, self control, self esteem and self discipline.
- Respect for adults and for each other.
- The value of setting goals and working towards them.
- Teamwork.
- How to overcome a bully situation.
Little Dragons
Little Dragons is a program designed specifically for kids between the ages of 5 and 6. It caters to their needs in a fun friendly and safe environment. We focus on improving:
- Basic motor function, Co-ordination and Balance.
- Listening Skills.
- Focus and Concentration.
- Teamwork.
- Confidence.
- Anti-Bullying.
These skills will help them become more confident and they will become better at school, at home.
The material we cover prepares them for entry into Taekwon-do as a martial art. We aim to make them more accepting of others, to help rather than criticise. Teamwork and integration plays a large role in the development of the Little Dragons. We also teach stranger awareness. Addressing questions like ?What does a Stranger look like?? When the Little Dragons are ready they will graduate into the Taekwon-do class and continue their training.
Little Dragon Oath - said at start of class
I am a Little Dragon and I swear,
To obey the rules and respect my instructor
And to only use my skills for self-defence.
Little Dragon Tenets - said at end of class:
I will be respectful.
I will be honest.
I will not give up.
I will control myself.
I will not be afraid.
