How old must my children be before they can start Taekwon-do?

Depending on the club and the classes kids can start at 4 years of age. The little Dragons is specifically designed for young kids and although aimed at 5 - 6 year olds, younger children may be permitted to train after they under go an evaluation class. Generally Taekwon-do classes cater for 7 and up but again like the Little Dragons there are exceptions. If you have any further questions please get in touch via the Contact Info button.

Am I too old to start?

NO! There are people training in Taekwon-do between the ages of 5 and 80. We believe you your limits are only those you have self-imposed and we'll do our best to help you expand them. Age is just a number.

I'm not very fit or flexible, can I still join?

Of course. Taekwon-do will help improve your level of fitness and flexibility. This in turn will filter through and benefit your everyday life.

Do I have to have a special uniform?

At the beginning loose fitting clothing such as a tracksuit and T-shirt is fine. However if you are serious about Taekwon-do then we ask that all our members get a regulation white suit (called a Dobok) and the belt indicating their level of skill before or after their first grading.

Will I learn to defend myself?

Yes! Martial Arts developed as a method to defend oneself, be it in a city or on the battlefield. Today, although circumstances have changed and few of us find ourselves stuck on battlefield there is still a need to defend the weak and ourselves. The skills you will learn will enable you to react to different attack situations using the blocks, restraints, punches and kicks that you have been taught in class.

Do I have to grade (take belts)?

No! It is purely optional. A belt is a visual sign of how good an individual is! At the beginning a white belt is worn indicating the first level of Taekwon-do. We'd like to think that the challenge of learning a dynamic, thoroughly modern martial art will inspire you to set goals for yourself. A formal grading initially appears quite daunting but by overcoming this, a student will boast his/her self-esteem and confidence, a great achievement in itself. We realise, however, that there are as many reasons for doing Taekwon-do, as there are Taekwon-do practitioners in our clubs. If you are happy not to grade we will still be happy to have you in our club.

Can I achieve my black belt?

Yes! A black belt is an indication of sound knowledge and technical competence in Taekwon-do. You can achieve one irrespective of your age and physical ability. Beginning with white belt there are ten steps to black belt. Each step is designed to increase your knowledge and technical expertise in a manageable way. There is no set time period to reach black belt and you will not be put under pressure. Instead a student will travel at his/her own pace and when they are ready they will grade.

Do I have to enter competitions?

Entering competitions is totally optional and no one will be forced to, although we recommend that students try to enter twice a year. The competitions are held regionally, nationally and internationally. There are separate sections for men, women, boys and girls. These in turn are split into different belt divisions and then into weights for adults and heights for children.
Competitions are a great way to boost confidence and gain experience as well as meeting like-minded people, learning new techniques and having fun while you indulge your competitive drive in a safe environment.

Does Taekwon-do cater for people with disabilities?

Yes! Taekwon-do is the great equaliser. In line with its philosophy we pride ourselves on seeking a person's worth not the particulars of their circumstances. We will strive to make Taekwon-do fit your abilities. It is the key that helps you unlock your potential. This applies to everyone however able-bodied he or she may be.
